The effects of vertebrate granivores and folivores on plant community structure in the Chihuahuan Desert

چکیده
We examined the effects of vertebrate granivores and folivores on winter and summer plant communities in the Chihuahuan Desert by selectively excluding different vertebrate combinations of birds, rodents, and large folivorous mammals from small experimental plots continuously since 1982. Few differences were observed across treatments during the first two yr of the experiment. The influence of vertebrates on winter and summer plant communities became apparent after three yr, and changes continued to occur after 11 yr of exclusion. Multivariate repeated-measures analyses indicated that removal of birds and both birds and rodents caused significant increases in the total density of winter annuals. The winter annual plant density was highest on bird removal plots and this increase was significant by 1985. Canonical Discriminant Analyses revealed that the exclusion of birds and both birds and rodents had the strongest influence on species composition of both winter and summer plant communities, although the winter plant community was more sensitive to vertebrate exclusion than the summer plant community. The exclusion of birds had the greatest effect on composition of summer plant communities followed in importance by the exclusion of rodents and mammalian folivores. Most of the plant species that responded significantly to the treatments were large-seeded winter annuals. Our results both complement earlier experimental work documenting the impacts of the granivorous rodents and folivorous mammals on desert plant communities and now demonstrate the important influence of avian granivores.

Community Structure of Desert Small Mammals: Comparisons across Four Continents1
Presencelabsence data for the small-mammal species at sites in seven deserts were analyzed for evidence of similarity in community structure. The deserts studied were located in North and South America (268 and 118 sites, respectively), Australia (245 sites), Israel (54 sites), and greater Eurasia (Thar, 15 sites; Turkestan, 36 sites; Gobi, 98 sites). Patterns observed in all deserts included: ...

d4hstract. An experimental study of competition between kangaroo rats (Dipodornys spp.) and other sympatric desert rodents using exclosures with "semipermeable" fences has been continuously maintained at a site in the northern Chihuahuan Desert since 1977. A new set of experimental manipulations begun in 1988 at the same site repeated this study. As reported previously for this community, exclu...
متن کاملIndirect Facilitation of Granivorous Birds by Desert Rodents: Experimental Evidence from Foraging Patterns1
In order to quantify the response of birds to experimental manipulations of seed availability and densities of granivorous rodents and ants, we counted granivorous birds and measured diurnal and nocturnal seed removal on 24 plots during winter months in the Chihuahuan Desert. Removal of single, widely spaced millet seeds provided a reliable measure of bird and rodent foraging activity. Avian fo...
متن کاملAtmospheric nitrogen deposition in the northern Chihuahuan desert: Temporal trends and potential consequences
Rates and impacts of atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition are poorly understood in arid land ecosystems where soils are typically low in plant available N. To address this issue, we quantified long-term trends in N deposition and estimated its impact on plant community structure in the northern Chihuahuan desert of Central New Mexico, USA. Annual and seasonal rates of N deposition were strongly ...
متن کاملThe composition of seed banks on kangaroo rat (Dipodomys spectabilis) mounds in a Chihuahuan Desert grassland
Disturbance is a major factor determining the plant community structure of ecological systems. In particular, small-scale disturbances from animals can increase heterogeneity and species diversity in plant communities. Kangaroo rat (Dipodomys spectabilis) mounds are small-scale disturbances that support unique plant communities compared to surrounding habitats. The seed bank, which is usually a...
